On 16 April 1959, three inmates, Lee Smart, Jerry Myles, and George Alton, carefully took over the Montana State Prison. They were able to take rifles from guards quietly and took them hostage. In half an hour, they had captured every staff and guard. Sadly, Deputy Warden Ted Rothe was killed in the process.
