Route Description. The trail begins at the signed trailhead (5730 ft) on the west side of the parking lot. The trail forks a short distance after the trailhead. Go left at the fork. After another 100 ft or so, the trail forks again. Take the middle fork and begin climbing hard and switchbacking up through the forest. I enjoyed that. The scenery is amazing: soaring sharp peaks, ancient reef, caves, a narrow canyon. The 1st mile or so shares the same path with Guadalupe Peak Trail, then branches off to what makes this trail unique: a wash of rocks, rocks, then more rocks. If you are able, I would strongly recommend hiking the Permian Reef Trail instead of the more popular McKittrick Canyon Trail.
