The .500 has a bit larger frontal area. The .45/70 operates at lower pressure and the bullets have a bit better sectional density. Both shine as short to mid-range thumpers in my opinion. I rather liked my combination of the .45/70 Marlin lever gun and the .500 S&W revolver.
